What makes me curious is the long-term online community for this and the idea of beating global high scores (or best times). And I think a game like this would be even better if Nintendo made it a core part of its own Virtual Console collections of classic games on the Switch Online service. It also had graphics that weren’t as good as they were on other consoles. Nonetheless, the gameplay was still on point, and the bells and whistles were pretty amazing for an SNES game. We loved it.

The top-down levels are much more open ended in that you must adventure around the map destroying five hubs, upon which you face a final boss. The levels are still filled with enemies, but instead of platforming elements like in the side scrolling levels, there are now traps like collapsing bridges. The controls are a bit awkward at first, but within a few minutes it is easy to get accustomed. While I really liked the variety that these two types of levels offered, I found that the traps in the top-down levels were quite cheap and artificially made the game harder than it actually was. PixelKnight Most immediately noticeable is its similarities to Cyber Spin. The two games are more or less completely interchangeable. Sure, Battle Grand Prix has a modern aesthetic instead of futuristic, and features a brake button instead of a boost, but that’s kind of it. There are the usual exhibition and career modes here, but there’s also a two-player multiplayer mode.

This was an era when arcades were still booming, and Street Fighter II Turbo was the perfect substitute if you couldn’t leave the house to play your favorite game at the mall. It even felt like a suitable upgrade to its predecessor, The World Warrior, which made that game feel obsolete when you popped this baby in. It’s kind of like what Capcom does today with some of its recent releases (We’re looking at you, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3).
